It’s All About the Angle

It’s All About the Angle

Part I - Feat. Mark Felbinger & Matthew Key

FEBRUARY 15, 2023 — What a livestream! From the Internet exiting stage right to the sound just straight up saying “nope,” Kenneth Roberts sat down with Matthew Key and Mark Felbinger for CREW WEEK to discuss how the making of DEATH’S VISAGE looked from behind—or through—the actual camera and how it was to film in certain locations.

According to Matthew, there were a lot of tight spaces they had to film in (big camera, itty bitty filming space!). In some words, Matt described the process as “physically awkward,” especially with trying to fit the camera, five people, and the additional necessary equipment into (for an example) the bathroom for a scene. Matt also dove into the ways in which the angle of the lens affected the overall tone of the scene and the degree of emotion the actor was wanting to display. For example, for a more moody effect, shadows were employed to create suspense and a more secretive attitude; however, to emphasize the opposite, allowing more light to reflect off of the actor’s face helped accomplish the desired tone.

Annnnnd there went Matt’s connection…

…annd we’re back! Wait, nope. Just kidding.

Amidst all of the interruptions, we were able to discover Matt’s camera preferences, which he immediately claimed the Parasonic Lumix S5 as his go-to. Not only was it cheaper than the S1, but it also had better image quality.

As the director of the film, Mark discussed his inspirations when it came to fellow directors in the world of film, including the names, Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter (whom he met at Spooky Empire Convention), and George A. Romero (whom he also met). Not only did these talented filmmakers inspire Mark’s journey, but they also offered many influences to him throughout his artistic development.

So, in the end, this week’s #TwitchTuesday didn’t go exactly as planned, but we definitely appreciated everyone’s patience as we tried to resolve the issues. Next up on the livestream schedule: CAST WEEK. Be sure to keep up our socials to see who will be guest starring on the stream and when we go LIVE!
